How to Buy Your First Guitar
Here at George's Music - The Musician's Choice™, the focus is on "Value". Value = high quality at a fair price. Here are a few tips to consider when buying an acoustic or electric guitar.
  • You should be able to put your hand around the guitar neck comofortably.
  • It should be easy for you to press the strings down to the fingerboard.
  • The tuning gears at the top of the neck should turn smoothly and easily, if not you may find that your guitar will be difficult to tune.
  • The body of the guitar should fit comfortably in your lap when you sit down. If the body of the guitar is too large it will feel uncomfortable. Most acoustic guitars have steel strings; classical guitars have softer nylon strings.
  • Less expensive acoustic guitars usually have laminated wood tops (similar to layers you see in plywood). More expensive acoustic guitars will typically have solid wood tops. A solid wood top will vibrate more freely than a laminated top.
  • Electric guitars use pickups mounted underneath the strings to amplify the sound of the strings vibrating. Think of pickups as microphones mounted on the body of the guitar under the strings. Some electrics have a tremolo/vibrato arm while others do not. One is not better than the other, they're just different.
  • Since guitars are made of wood, in time they will change and need to be re-adjusted. After you've played your new guitar for a few weeks, bring it back ot us so that we can make any further adjustments that may be necessary.
